Yup, we have a new dog in the kennel. A feisty little male Jack Russel Terrier puppy. Here he is on his first trip to Balai Laiya Beach Resort. So far, we have not yet agreed on a name for him.

I cannot overemphasize the fact that the Pekingese are cute and adorable little dogs. They love being cuddled and pampered, and in return, they are deeply loyal and devoted to their human. They are great comics, too. Their quirky personalities only add to the wonderful character of these lion-dogs.

Take our little Ginger, for example. Last Saturday, after her bath, we took her with us to our room. She spent a couple of minutes of inspecting and sniffing out the room. Occasionally, she would stand up against the bed or the sofa as if trying to map out where we were. We would pet her on the head and she would go about her merry way. I was surfing the net in my laptop when out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Ginger jerking. I stopped surfing to find out what was going on. Apparently, she was trying to eat a mosquito hovering above her head. The poor insect must have been trying to bite her in the nose (practically the only part of her body devoid of fur). Immensely amused were we of her antics, we decided to take her picture. Unfortunately, she did not like the flash too much.

I think the flash startled her.

She ran for cover under Robin's clothes' rack.

Tin has is pretty busy with her food blog , and I have been busy with a new blog. Told Tin today I wanted to go to another dog show, so we will be looking out for one. Oh, by the way, we got married :)

Fourteen thousand dolphins are killed in Japan every year. The manner of killing is barbaric. I learned about this sad fact, because Hayden Panettiere went to Japan to try to save a group of pilot whales from slaughter. msnbc wrote "As a spokesperson for SaveTheWhalesAgain.org, Panettiere hopes her traumatic ordeal will help raise awareness. 'We all crossed our fingers that those whales didn’t die in vain,' she concluded."

While it is not fair to condemn an entire country or a condemn an entire people for the actions of a few, or even the actions of the majority, the rational mind has it limits, and 14,000 Dolphins is past mine. I do condemn.

"Whales and dolphins are traditionally used (as resources) in Japan," said Hideki Moronuki of the Japanese Fisheries Agency. "In this light, we cannot accept an argument simply based on emotional causes."

I am angry, and angry people are not rational ones. I just lost my taste for anything Japanese, their cars, their foods, their clothes... everything with "Made in Japan" stamped on it. I will do my best, to give Ms. Moronuki, more than "emotional causes" to change her mind.

Next time someone ask me to eat at a Japanese Restaurant, I will just have to say, "I am sorry I do not eat Japanese food. They kill dolphins." Besides, all the blood killed my appetite.

Dog Biscuits

It is no secret that our dogs go gaga over dog biscuits. Recently, we got them this big bag of gourmet flavor dog biscuits and they tore into it in just a few days. One morning I saw Maguai sleeping soundly on top of the empty package of the biscuits. Apparently, it fell into his cage the night before. I can only imagine what he was dreaming about that morning.

I used to make huge batches of homemade dog biscuits for our little furry friends. But lately, I'd been very busy with work and whatnot that I could not bake for them anymore. Soon, I hope. I know that dog bone cookie cutter is stashed up there somewhere. Making these dog biscuits is pretty enjoyable after all, I can use the R&R. And watching these cute little dogs happily gobble up what you make is the icing on the cake.

I found this HUGE bag of dog biscuits in the supermarket a few days ago. The bag was huge and screaming purple so it was really hard to miss. I looked closer. 8 pounds of imported dog biscuits for only Php 462.50! Of course, I had to get one.

The biscuits come in 5 gourmet flavors- chicken, bacon, peanut butter, vegetable, and beef. They smell so good that I am tempted to try one. But I have a feeling that our dogs won't agree if I took one. They get very excited when they see me approaching their kennel with handfuls of these biscuits. Needless to say, these dog biscuits are a hit.

Buffy is a little Jack Russel Terrier (US Standard). More importantly she is my dog. She is a little fireball, the girl loves to run and chase anything about her size or smaller. She can be annoying at times, but I love the little spitfire.

Last Friday, June 8, 2007, Robin and I went on a little trip to Tagaytay. We had lunch at Breakfast at Antonio's and on our way home, we noticed some signs of dog supplies manufacturers outside Tagaytay Vista Hotel. Curious, we stopped by to have a look-see. As it turns out, the Veterinary Practitioners Association of the Philippines (VPAP) is holding its 35th Annual Scientific Conference. Outside the venue, there were a lot of stalls showcasing veterinary products.

We spied on an Oxyfresh banner outside so we were quite hopeful to find them in one of the stalls. We have been looking for Oxyfresh for over a year now after their office in Mandaluyong closed down. That is why I was very happy when I found out that they did have a stall there. I was able to talk to Liza, Oxyfresh's Direct Marketing Coordinator and I told her how glad we were to find them. Their pet deodorizer worked really well on our Pekingese dogs which are quite infamous for bad breath (tee hee..).

We got two 16 oz bottles of the pet deodorizer when they didn't have a 1 gal. bottle. Afterall, we had many dogs. At least now though, we know where to find them when we run out again:

Mushu loving every minute of grooming.

Tuesday is bath day for the Pekes. With all that fur, it's no wonder why these dogs are not afraid of the water. Not to mention how they really love being groomed. While the Pekingese are generally snobbish dogs, they have taken to Tita quite fast. After a day of bathing and grooming, Tita has risen the ranks of the Pekes most favored humans, next to only their owners (I hope).

Dog day at Tagaytay

Took the Buff-dog (real name: Buffy; a.k.a. Buffer and "The Annoying Dog") and Kristine to a trip in Tagaytay.

Started out in Tereyaki Boy where Buffy and I shared a Sukiyaki. Buffy was generally well behaved, although she did jump one waiter (on those occasions I am really glad she is a small dog) and later tip over her water bottle to Kristine's consternation. We then went to Picnic Grove where we met up with Leen. Were threated to another nice view of the Taal Volcano. After Picnic Grove, we went to Bag of Beans where Buffy and I shared in the Apple Pie and Braided Bread. Surprisingly, she loved both. Ended day at Josephine's again overlooking the Taal Volcano.

She had a really good day. JRT's are great companions for trips. Even when you know she is feeling tired, if there is more walking to be done, she won't quit on you. Buffy slept like a log, alternately on my and on Kristine's lap, all the way home.

It is a very hot summer!

Dog Biscuit Recipe

I was searching for new dog biscuit recipes and I came across twodogpress.com. I found lots of dog biscuit recipes there and this is one of them:


	2 teaspoons dry yeast 1/2 cup lukewarm water 2 tablespoons dry parsley	1 1/2 cups chicken broth 3 tablespoons honey 1 egg 5-6 cups whole wheat flour

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 ° F (180 ° C).

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir in the parsley, broth, honey, and egg. Gradually blend in flour, adding enough to form a stiff dough.

Transfer to a floured surface and knead until smooth (about 3-5 minutes). Shape the dough into a ball, and roll to 1/4-inch (6 mm) thick. Using small bone-shaped cookie cutters, make biscuits! Transfer to ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about 1/4 inch (6 mm) apart. Gather up the scraps, roll out again, and cut additional biscuits.

Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and turn over. Bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until lightly browned on both sides. Let cool overnight. (After we finish baking all batches of biscuits, we turn off the oven, then spread all the biscuits out on one baking sheet and set them in the oven to cool overnight. The extra time in the oven as it cools off helps make the treats crispier and crunchier.)

Makes several dozen small bones that keep and freeze well. We like these biscuits because they're quick and easy and we always have the ingredients on hand to make them. Our boys like them because they're good!

We make our own chicken broth by boiling 1 pound of chicken in 8 cups of water, seasoned with 1 teaspoon thyme, 3 teaspoons parsley, 1 teaspoon celery seed, and one bay leaf, for 1 1/2 hours. Remove the chicken and use it for salads or other recipes that call for cooked chicken. Let the broth cool before using it in these recipes.

Mushu's fur remarkably improved with the regular weekly baths. He's always had the fluffiest fur but that also made it the hardest to maintain. It's a good thing we found somebody who can wash the dogs every week. Now, Mushu's fur is healthy as ever.

I found this piece of distressing news at MSNBC:

WASHINGTON - A massive pet food recall has touched a nerve with pet-loving Americans, many of whom see their pets as family members.

The recalled products — 60 million cans and pouches of wet dog and cat food manufactured by Menu Foods of Ontario, Canada — account for 1 percent of pet food sold in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has said. But in a country where more than half the people in a 2004 survey said they would risk their lives for their pets, the thought that food could kill their animals sent fearful consumers scrambling for information about affected products.

Ehrlichiosis

Ehrlichiosis is caused by the rickettsial organism Ehrlichia canis. Other examples of rickettsial organisms are Riskettsia rickettsi, which causes Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Ehrlichia risticii, which causes Potomac Fever in horses. These orgainisms tend to be carried by ticks and other insect vectors, in some cases. For ehrlichiosis, the most common vector is the brown dog tick. For this reason, ehrlichiosis occurs anywhere this tick occurs. At present, it has been reported in 34 states, with the northern states being spared in most instances. The southeastern and south central states are the most heavily affected. A few cases of Ehrlichia canis infection have been reported in people after tick bites.

Ehrlichia infection can cause a number of clinical signs. It can be extremely hard to diagnose due to the wide range of symptoms that can occur. Most dogs infected with this organism will have be lethargic, lose weight, show less interest in food and become anemic. Other possible clinical signs include hemorrhages under the skin or in around the gums, swollen lymph nodes, muscular or joint soreness, nasal discharges or nosebleeds, severe neck or back pain, blood in the urine and eye problems ranging from exudates to severe inflammation of the internal eye structures. Neurologic signs such as seizures and difficulty walking can occur. Respiratory or heart related signs can occur due to hemorrhaging and compensation for anemia if it becomes severe. Hemorrhaging occurs primarly due to decrease in platelet counts from the infection. While most dogs show a number of symptoms when first infected with Ehrlichia, there is also a chronic infection that can occur if the acute infection is not treated. In this case, the dog may appear to be normal or may show vague signs of illness occasionally. This is one cause of the complaint that "my dog just isn't doing right". The chronic illness can suddenly become very severe again if the dog is stressed in some manner or become less immune competent for some reason.

The best method of diagnosing this disease is through testing of serum from the dog using an immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test. Unfortunately, a positive test only indicates exposure. Still, in the presence of clinical signs or if the titer rises after treatment or stays consistently high, infection is strongly implied by the lab results.

Ehrlichia canis is normally susceptible to treatment with tetracycline antibiotics, including doxycycline. In some situations the organism will not respond to these antibiotics or their use is contraindicated due to the young age of a dog or pregnancy. In this case, chloramphenicol can be used and there is anecdotal evidence of success using cephalosporin antibiotics. The bleeding tendencies in this disease are related to a drop in platelets (thrombocytopenia) so it can be necessary to use corticosteroids to treat this condition if the platelet counts are low. While this can be life saving, the use of corticosteroids should be discontinued as quickly as possible so that their immunosuppressive effect does not interfere with successful treatment. Extensive supportive care, including intravenous fluids, administration of blood products and hospitalization may be necessary to treat this problem in some dogs. The survival rate is good if the disease is recognized and treated aggressively.

Symptoms

In acute infections, a fever of 103-104°, shivering, and muscle tenderness are the first signs.

In acute infections a fever of 103-104°, shivering, and muscle tenderness are the first signs. Then vomiting and rapid dehydration may develop. Severely infected dogs may develop hypothermia and become depressed and die before kidney or liver failure has a chance to develop.

In subacute infections, the animal usually develops a fever, anorexia, vomiting, dehydration, and increased thirst. The dog may be reluctant to move due to muscle or kidney pain. Animals with liver involvement may develop icterus. Dogs that develop kidney or liver involvement may begin to show improvement in organ function after 2 to 3 weeks or they may develop chronic renal failure. Despite the possibility of severe infection and death, the majority of leptospiral infections in dogs are chronic or subclinical. Dogs that become chronically infected may show no outward signs, but may intermittently shed bacteria in the urine for months or years.

Diagnosis

A positive diagnosis can be made through a blood test. A blood sample of the suspected animal is drawn and sent into the laboratory where a microscopic agglutination test is performed. This can test for individual serovars (strains) and the level of antibody (titer) against these strains. Depending on the level of the titer, a positive diagnosis to the specific serovar can be made. Titers may be negative in the first 10 days after initial infection, so many times additional samples must be drawn and tested to get a positive diagnosis. Previous vaccination can give an elevated titer and this must be taken into consideration when interpreting the titers.

Acutely infected or chronically infected dogs will most likely be shedding Leptospira organisms in their urine. It is possible to culture a urine sample and get a positive diagnosis. However, because of intermittent shedding and bacterial contamination this is not always the best way to diagnose the disease.

Treatment

Treatment consists of antibiotics, fluid replacement, and controlling the vomiting and the problems associated with the corresponding kidney or liver infections. Penicillin, or one of its derivatives is the antibiotic of choice for treating the initial infection. After the initial infection is controlled, doxycycline is often used to cure and prevent a potential long-term carrier state. Intravenous or subcutaneous fluids are often given to correct dehydration while the corresponding liver or kidney problems are treated.

(INFECTIOUS TRACHEOBRONCHITIS)

WHAT IS IT?

Kennel cough is a bronchitis characterized by a harsh, hacking cough which most people describe as sounding like “something stuck in my dog’s throat.” It is analogous to a chest cold for humans and is only a serious condition in special circumstances (see below); in general, it resolves on its own..

HOW INFECTION OCCURS?

The normal respiratory tract has substantial safeguards against invading infectious agents. The most important of these is probably what is called the “mucociliary escalator.” This safeguard consists of tiny hairlike structures called cilia, which protrude from the cells lining the respiratory tract, and a coat of mucus over them. The cilia beat in a coordinated fashion. Debris, including infectious agents, get trapped in the sticky mucus and the cilia move the mucus upward towards the throat where the collection of debris and mucus may be coughed up and/or swallowed.

The mucociliary escalator is damaged by the following:

shipping stress
crowding stress
heavy dust exposure
cigarette smoke exposure
infectious agents (viruses such as reovirus, adenovirus, parainfluenza virus, and even the distemper virus can be initiating infections)
Cold temperature
Poor ventilation

Without this protective mechanism, invading bacteria, especially Bordetella bronchiseptica may simply march down the airways unimpeded.

Bordetella bronchiseptica has some tricks of its own as well:

It is able to bind directly to cilia, rendering them unable to move within 3 hours of contact.
It secretes substances that disable the immune cells normally responsible for consuming & destroying bacteria

Because it is common for Bordetella to be accompanied by at least one other infections agent (such as one of the viruses listed above), “Kennel Cough” is actually a complex of infections, rather than infection by one agent.

Classically, dogs get infected when they are kept in a crowded situation with poor air circulation but lots of warm air (i.e. a boarding kennel, vaccination clinic, obedience class, local park, animal shelter, animal hospital waiting room, or grooming parlor). In reality, most causes of coughing that begin acutely in the dog are due to infectious causes and usually represent some form of Kennel Cough.

THE INCUBATION PERIOD IS 2 - 14 DAYS

HOW CONTAGIOUS IS IT?

Bordetella infection can be picked up by rabbits, guinea pigs, pigs, cats (if they are very young and housed in groups), and other dogs. It is not contagious to humans though it is closely related to Bordetella pertussis, the agent of Whooping Cough. Among dogs it is fairly contagious depending on stress level, vaccination status, and exposure to minor viruses.

Our hospital recommends keeping all dogs current on their Bordetella vaccinations as you never know when they be in an unexpected situation

HOW IS IT TREATED?

Although most cases will go away on their own, we like to think we can hasten recovery with antibiotics to directly kill the Bordetella organism. Alternatively, Kennel Cough may be treated with cough suppressants to provide comfort during natural recovery. Or antibiotics and cough suppressants can be combined.

WHEN IS IT A SERIOUS CONDITION?

In very young puppies, especially those with a recent shipping history (i.e. pet store puppies) are especially prone to severe cases of infectious tracheobronchitis (frequently progressing to pneumonia).

In dogs where the distemper virus is involved (usually shelter or pet store puppies), there is tremendous potential for serious consequences. (For more information on distemper, click here)

VACCINATION OPTIONS:

There are basically two options for Kennel cough vaccination: injectable and intranasal.

Injectable is a good choice for aggressive dogs, who may bite if their muzzle is approached. It provides good systemic immunity as long as two doses are given after age 4 months (with an annual booster). Injectable vaccination may only lead to less severe infection and not complete prevention.

Intranasal vaccination may be given as early as 2 weeks of age and immunity generally lasts 10-12 months. (Usually this vaccine is boosted annually.) The advantage here is that the local immunity is stimulated, right at the site where the natural infection would be trying to take hold.

It takes 4 days to generate a solid immune response after intranasal vaccination so it is best if vaccination is given at least 4 days prior to the exposure. Some dogs will have some sneezing or nasal discharge in the week following intranasal vaccination. As a general rule, nasal vaccination provides faster immunity than injectable vaccination.

Parainfluenza, Adenovirus type 2, and canine distemper, all members of the Kennel Cough complex, are all covered by the standard DHLPP vaccine, the basic vaccine for dogs. Adenovirus Type 2 serum also immunizes against Adenovirus Type 1, the agent of infectious canine hepatitis.

WHAT IF IT DOESN’T IMPROVE?

As previously noted, this infection is generally self-limiting. It should be at least improved partially after one week of treatment. If no improvement has been observed in this time, a re-check exam (possibly including radiographs of the chest) would be a good idea.

Today we brought Magi and Buffy to Seaside. We had Magi groomed- 400 pesos includes detangling, mat trimming, paw hair trimming, shampoo, conditioner, ear cleaning, nail trimming, blow dry, the works, for a full two hours. Needless to say, the Maguai was pampered silly thanks to Marge and her friendly staff. Buffy on the other hand got her ear professionally cleaned.

After buying some treats for the dogs, we went to Powerstation for dinner. We had dinner at Yasubei Japanese restaurant where the waitresses fussed over adorable little Magi who was running around Powerstation without a leash (apparently, he does not like being leashed. Otherwise he would chew on the leash and would refuse to walk altogether.)

Our day ended at Starbucks where my sister got four stickers for her red card and Buffy got cinnamon roll crumbs from the floor. Back home, it only took a few minutes before the two dogs were dead to the world. But I'm pretty sure they'd be dreaming about this day all night long.

One of the hardest hit by Typhoon Milenyo was Cavite, our province. (Notice the during and after shots of the typhoon.)

Our kennel was designed to have maximum ventilation. Good for the summer, but very bad for typhoons. Caught off guard, the dogs got a bit wet before we got all of them inside the house.

The weather is fine now. In fact it's getting a bit warm again, like nothing happened. The dogs are fine, too, a bit shaken but dry.

The Snoop Scoop: Pet Shops at Sea Side!

Something's got Snoopy very excited...

There is a new complex beside Seaside in Macapagal Blvd. and a large section of it seems to be devoted to pet shops. Most are still closed when we went there a couple of days ago (On the corner near the seafood market looks to be a HUGE Bioresearch Hypermart). But I can safely say that this is very exciting for pet lovers. Some shops are airconditioned and all of them are very clean. They look a lot like the pet shops in Tiendesitas, so for those who live around southern Manila and find Pasig very far, this is the place to be.

They sell pet supplies, even those hard to find ones, at reasonable prices and some shops even offer dog grooming. Check it out!

After getting a job, I didn't have time to groom the pekes and shih tzus as regularly as I used to. Fortunately, the lady that washes our clothes likes dogs, too, and she agreed to wash all 10 fluffballs once a week for a small fee. I started scoping out good pet grooming products (since I am feeling guilty, I am overcompensating a bit). Right now I am trying Sergeant's pet shampoos. The whitening shampoo worked well with buffy. We are still giving the green anti-tick and flea formula a test run. It's supposed to kill and stave off those evil little buggers for ten days.

Hi Meredith, The outcome of dogs with pneumonia is largely dependent on the cause of the pneumonia and the severity of the infection. It can take at least 2-3 days before the antibiotics to begin working. Tell your friend to follow the directions which the vet has given, and be sure to dispense all of the medication, and the puppy should have a total recovery. Antibiotics are usually given for at least three weeks, but that can go longer depending on the dog's clinical results. Regarding your second question, yes, a quick diagnosis will lead to a quick recovery, with less possibilities for complications. If the other dog is coughing, it should be taken to see the vet as soon as possible. It may have been exposed, and pneumonia is very contagious. Ask the vet how long to keep the dogs separated. Keep the puppy warm and dry and see that he gets plenty of water to drink while he's healing from pneumonia. If your friend has a moist air humidifier, place it near where the puppy spends a lot of time, as the moist air will help him breathe easier. (Make sure the humidifier is kept clean). Tell
your friend not to over-exercise the puppy; allow only what your puppy can tolerate. Do not allow the puppy to get short of breath during exercise/activity. Use a harness instead of a collar; this is less restricting to the neck, and will allow the puppy to breathe easier. The puppy should not be around people who smoke. I hope I've been a help.

Somebody asked me what the difference between show quality and pet quality dogs. I did some research and found this informative article about the difference between show quality and pet quality beagles--

PET QUALITY OR SHOW QUALITY

The average dog owner considers all dogs "pets". But in show dogs terms this has a different connotation. While all my dogs are my "pets" (dogs that I love and care for)-I make a distinction between the show potential and pet quality puppies when selling them.
The term "pet quality" to a show breeder means that there is something with that particular puppy that would decrease or remove any chance of it being championship material. To the untrained eye, often these imperfections would not be seen.
In beagles this may mean, short ears, wrong coat color, one crooked tooth or many crooked teeth, legs too long, toes too flat, tail with a small kink, light colored eyes, undescended testicles, muzzle too narrow, tail set to low on body, tail carried to high over back,bow legged in the rear, chest two wide in front, too large with potential to grow to over 15 inches height at the shoulders( this is a disqualifying fault with AKC).... etc. These things do not make a dog less a pet or less able to love his new home. Again to the average person many of these things would not even be noticed.
Here is a picture of a puppy I sold as a "pet". She was very small, had short ears and her muzzle looked short to me and I could not imagine breeding her due to her size. The family that got her loves her dearly. She has made a wonderful "pet". She has turned out as I expected and has the home she deserves; sleeping in her human's bed and being the center of attention.
Determining "pet quality vs show potential" is an individual breeders decision based on the interpretation of the AKC beagle standard and the needs of a breeding program. REPUTABLE BREEDERS sell all "pets quality" puppies with a spay/neuter contract and limited registration. PET QUALITY puppies are NOT breeding stock.
"SHOW POTENTIAL" puppies are those puppies that I judge at that age to be capable of achieving an AKC championship at maturity. This is of course depends on the fact that they grow up to look as I expect. A breeder makes an educated guess based on past experiences. I recently had big puppy bitch that I would have bet the house would grow to be a 15". Well, at six months of age she is only 12 1/2" and may stay a 13" MUCH TO MY AMAZEMENT. Her father is a line which I have not used before, so there were different genetics at work.
The cost of pet quality and show potential varies with show potential being the most costly. Most show breeders will not sell their show quality puppies to homes that only want pets. Many breeders have waiting list-so if you are looking for a pet beagle contact those in your area.

Reputable breeders want all their puppies to be loved and to be someone's "pet". But we must make decisions on which of our puppies are good enough to be shown and hopefully mature in to future breeding stock. Future breeding stock should be better than their parents and are to be cherished. Many champions are finished but this alone does not make that beagle breeding stock. A breeder should only breed the best;striving with each generation to improve the health, structure, and overall quality of their beagles.

Maguai at the Bench Show

Robin and I went to the Pedigree bench show last saturday. He brought Buffy, I brought Maguai. Buffy met a lot of nice people and, of course, dogs and she looked like she had a lot of fun. Maguai, unlike Buffy, wasn't in the mood to circulate. He refused to walk so I had to carry him around the whole afternoon. He seemed amused by all the dogs he met at the show but that did not make him want to run around excitedly as he does at home. Fortunately, Maguai was not too heavy and he was clean and fluffy so I didn't mind having to carry him around. It was just like carrying a stuffed toy. Over all, it was a fun day for us and the dogs. We got to see a lot of beautiful dogs, make new friends, watch exciting exhibitions, and scarf down a sabrett hotdog sandwich with everything on it-- yum!

One thing that really bugged me about the otherwise adorable pekingese is their propensity to develop bad breath. Until a little over a year ago, we discovered Oxyfresh pet deodorizer. We bought a gallon and it lasted a year with 8 pekingese. Apprehensive at first, thinking that the clear, odorless liquid was simply water, we regularly squirted the product into their waterbottles. But sure enough after a couple of weeks, the bad breath was gone. Needless to say, it worked wonders. However, when my sister and I went to the Oxyfresh office last Wednesday to buy another gallon after we ran out of it, we found out that they have closed. We asked the new tenant of the store where they moved but they said they really just closed completely. CLOSED? But why? And more importantly, where will get our Oxyfresh products? There are some stores that have their products on stock, but now we wonder, will those stocks be replenished? HELP!

Yehey! I just love freebies. Who doesn't? Anyway, we got the small dogs vaccinated last April 8 and 9 at the Pet One and Greenlegs event in Philamlife Village, Las Pinas. We had to make 2 trips because we have a lot of dogs, not including the big ones that won't fit the car. It was tiring but considering the vet bills you otherwise pay for, we really have nothing to complain about. They gave away Pet One samples to all registrants but the free dog grooming promo was given only to those who purchased Pet One dog food. I got some details on the Pedigree Bench show from the PCCI forum. It was posted by May Reyes from Pedigree. I will reproduce it here for those interested.--

...the PEDIGREE Bench Show is a conformation show with a little twist.

It is going to be the very first Bench show and the biggest event of PEDIGREE in the whole of Asia. It is patterned after the Bench shows of Crufts but due to limited space, it will be on a smaller scale.

This show is co-presented by three affiliate clubs, the Philippine Dobermann Federation, the Philippine Hound Group Club, Inc and the Bulacan K9 Club and will be for the benefit of the PCCI.

There is going to be a conformation back-to-back All-breed Championship dog show under two International Judges from Australia and fabulous PEDIGREE Bench Show trophies will await the winners. Points won from these shows will be accredited as this is a PCCI sanctioned show and points will be counted for the National Top Dog of the Year. PCCI show schedule shall be followed:

Saturday AM: Sporting & Terrier Group
Saturday PM: Toy & Hound Group

Sunday AM: Non-Sporting & Herding Group
Sunday PM: Working Group

Entry fees shall be the same as that of PCCI and you may register your entries through the PCCI office at (02)7218345. Please look for Janet.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join the conformation shows on April 22 & 23 at the NBC tent at the FORT. Comfortable holding areas for the dogs entered in the show shall be provided.

While the Conformation show is on-going there will be other activities and the highlight of the two-day event are the activities within the Bench area. Top Breeders with expertise on their own respective breeds and their dogs shall be occupying the Benches. Walk-ins, spectators and guests are welcome to visit the Benches and find out more about the breeds they are most interested in.

Breeders shall decorate their benches, post photos, posters or even give out leaflets as a means of sharing their knowledge on their particular breed. Breeders shall be available on both Saturday & Sunday to attend to all inquiries there may be on the said days. At the end of the event, the most popular Bench shall be given an award.

Puppies will not be allowed to be displayed and sold during the 2-day event. PEDIGREE strongly upholds the golden rule of Responsible Pet Ownership. Breeders are encouraged to invite their prospective puppy buyers to their house or kennel and develop a mentor-student relationship.

Benches shall be provided for by PEDIGREE. As for assigning of Bench participants, priority has been given to the PEDIGREE Ambassadors and PEDIGREE sponsored clubs. Other slots are still available and you may contact me at 0917-885-0508 on how to apply for it. Of course, being a PEDIGREE Event, PEDIGREE users shall be given priority.

Outside the tent, other canine activities are scheduled. All these geared on giving more knowledge to dog owners and will-be dog owners.

The Long and Short of It

I'd been curious why some pekingese have long fluffy coats while some have short, flat coats. Got this bit of info from the Pekingese Club of America:

A pekingese normally has an outer layer of “guard hair” and a woolly “undercoat”. The guard hair stands away from the dog’s skin and protects it from heat or cold. The undercoat provides extra warmth. It is more seasonal in its growth and shedding cycle. A healthy pekingese will shed some undercoat and guard hair on a regular basis. Hair loss can be managed if the dog is groomed regularly: daily for show dogs and at least twice per week for companion dogs. More noticeable losses of coat can occur due to climatic or hormonal changes, trauma or significant changes in diet. The fullness and length of a dog’s coat varies depending on the dog’s genetic makeup, its diet, and care. Show dogs usually carry more coat than a companion pet.

Temperatures are rising fast and being in a tropical country, this is one matter to take seriously when it comes to our dogs' health. I found this helpful article online with tips on how to handle the summer heat:

Summer Tips for Dog Lovers

Summer is fun for humans and dogs alike but a few common sense suggestions may make yours a happier one. Some dog's are particularly sensitive to the heat regardless of breed or amount of fur, watch your dog closely to prevent heat stroke and make sure your companion lives to a ripe old age.

Never leave your dog in a car in the summer even with the windows down or air conditioner running. Cars can stall or run out of gas.
Never leave your dog tied outside unattended in summer. Leave him in the basement or in a crate with a fan or air conditioner.
Don't walk or exercise your dog in the middle of the day. Go early in the morning or after the sun sets.
Take your dog swimming instead of running.
Buy a kiddie pool for your yard and put your dogs favorite toys in it. Teach your dog to play in the sprinkler or hose.
Try not to take your dog from cool air conditioning to intense heat, the temperature change could make him collapse.
Don't shave your dog down to the skin unless you have a breed you would do that with normally (like a cocker or a poodle). Less hair does not make the dog cooler. Nature has designed it so that dogs with a lot of fur (goldens, huskys, akitas) channel air to the skin to help cool them.
Keep your dog's coat in good condition by brushing him regularly and removing trapped dead hair which will prevent air from reaching his skin to cool him.

If your dog does overheat:

Get your dog to the vet fast !
Cool him down slowly in lukewarm water not freezing cold water. An abrupt change in temperature could make his body go into shock.
Put cotton soaked in rubbing alcohol between his toes.
Take his temperature every few minutes to be sure it's going down. Normal for a dog is 101-102.5. A high temperature for a dog is considered 104 or higher.
Wet a towel and wrap the dog in it.
Take the dog to an air conditioned room or car or set up a fan.

The most important thing to remember if your dog overheats is to act fast. If a dog's temperature stays high for longer than a few minutes permanent brain damage can result. If you cool him down, do so slowly so as not to send him into shock. Even if the crisis passes don't take any chances get your dog to the vet immediately.

Buffy's Day Out

We took buffy out last saturday to see the dog show at Tiendesitas. Also, we pigged-out on yummy Bonnie's barbecue, bought Robin's favorite Tagaytay mountain coffee ground beans for the coffee maker, got buffy a snazzy new harness, and eavesdropped on the Animal Scene anniversary program.

All in all, Buffy thought it was a pretty fruitful day.

I think you can probrably even walk your dog at PICC.

Jack Russell Terriers and Parson Russel Terriers

The "Jack Russell Terrier" is one of the more confusing dogs when it comes to breed standards. This is because there are several different prominent associations which have different breed standards for the lovable Russell Terrier. One main distinction is height.

I think the standard followed locally are the FCI standards, so we will start there. FCI breed standards identify two kinds of Russel Terriers: Jack Russell Terriers and Parson Russell Terriers. FCI Jack Russel Terrieirs have an ideal height of 10"to 12". The FCI has different standards for a close cousin of the Jack Russel Terrier named the Parson Russell Terrier. Male FCI Parson Russell Terriers have an ideal height of 14" and females an ideal height of 13". Notably, these are two distinct breeds.

In the United States, we have the American Kennel Club version of the Jack Russell Terrier, which was renamed Parson Russell Terrier. This dog has a ideal height of over 12" but not over 15".

Another prominent Russell Terrier in the United States, so prominent that it caused the American Kennel Club to change the name of its Jack Russell Terrier to Parson Russell Terrier, is the the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America (JRTCA). This group is dedicated to breeding the working class Jack Russell Terriers. Admittedly, I am partial to this group since it breeds dogs for health and performance rather than appearance, and biased too, since my Jack Russell Terrier comes from JRTCA lienage.

Anyway, the JRTCA height standards for a Jack Russel Terrier allows for a height between 10" to 15".

All in all it is a pretty confusing situation... but I am not into showing dogs so they are all pretty much the same to me. A cute dog, friendly highly energetic dog.

Limited Registration

There is talk in the PCCI forum that soon breeders will have the option of limited registration. There is not much details on this yet so I looked up some info on this on the web. The American Kennel Club treats limited registration as follows: Limited Registration: Dogs with Limited Registration privileges are allowed to compete in all AKC events except Conformation (dog shows). Puppies produced by a dog with Limited Registration are not eligible for AKC registration. Owners should know that the Limited Registration status has no bearing on a dog's potential to be an excellent representative of its breed, a wonderful pet, and a standout participant in most AKC events. When it comes to being a great competitor or just a lifelong friend, a dog with Limited Registration has no limits at all.

Offhand, it is said that this will contribute to the improvement of dog breeds in the Philippines.

The Legend and History of the Pekingese

The Pekingese, also known as the Lion-Dog, was held sacred in China during the Tang Dynasty. Chinese myth states that a lion fell in love with a marmoset. Because of this love, the lion asked the gods to reduce his size and allow him to live harmoniously with his beloved marmoset. His request was granted and the result of their union was the Pekingese.

More likely, the Pekingese is the result of interbreeding of various types of dogs from China. Over the years, the Peke has had several affectionate names. He has been called the lion-dog because of his long fluffy hair coat, and the sun dog because of the golden red color. And finally, the Pekingese has also been called the sleeve dog since the breed was often carried in the voluminous sleeves of the Imperial household.Prior to the British invasion of the Imperial Palace in 1860, the Pekingese was only known and coveted in the royal palaces. Pekes were so loved that anyone who tried to smuggle one out of China was risking his life.

During their invasion, the British found five Pekingese in the apartment of the Chinese Emperor’s aunt. These dogs were brought to England, thus introducing this special dog to the world. One of the dogs was presented to Queen Victoria. In 1893, the Pekingese was exhibited in England for the first time. Soon, the Pekingese took hold of the American fancy and in 1906 the breed was admitted to the American Kennel Club.

Bathing and Grooming a Pekingese

We bathe our Pekes twice a month. Here's how we do it:

1. Brush the coat well to minimize tangles and mats. Dilute 3 tablespoons of shampoo in 3 cups of water and lather the mixture with a lathering puff.
2. Wet the Peke with lukewarm water and scrub the fur down with the soapy lathering puff. Avoid the eye area.
3. Wash the shampoo off and dilute 3 tablespoons of conditioner in 2 cups of water.
4. Massage the conditioner mixture into the well rinsed fur and rinse well.
5. Towel dry your Peke. Carefully clean the outer ear, wrinkle, and eye area of your Peke with the a clean wet towel. Then blow dry (lowest possible heat) the fur with a slicker brush.
6. Use a comb to weed out the tangles and mats. Cut heavy mats with scissors.
7. Trim the hair in the paw pads with scissors and trim the nails with a cutter.

It's a tedious process but having a clean-smelling, fluffy bundle of joy to cuddle is well worth it.

Home-made dog biscuits

Haven't made these biscuits in months since I'd been busy. Our dogs love 'em to bits. There's something comforting about knowing what goes into what my dog eats and I'm sure it has none of those stuff you see in the ingredients list of commercially available dog treats with names you can't even pronounce. The kitchen smells like heaven as of this writing. Makes me want to steal one for myself. My dad seems to have the same idea...

Fun Doggy Events

It's the year of the Fire Dog and it's no surprise that man's best friend will get a lot of attention this 2006. There will be a doggy costume parade in Blue Wave Macapagal Blvd. this Sunday, January 29. Those interested to join in the fun may register in Blue wave prior to the event. There will also be a similar event in SM City North EDSA on th same date. We don't know the details yet on this one but it would be fun to go. Of course we'll be dropping by Tiendesitas on Saturday, January 28, for the PCCI dog show (January 28-29,2006 349th and 350th PCCI All Breeds Dog Show, Tiendesitas Frontera Verde ). Can't wait to see many gorgeous dogs under one (big) roof.

This is Maguai, son of Chiqui and Mushu. He's a sweet little thing. Remember Gizmo from the movie, Gremlins? Gizmo is a Maguai, a creature that multiplies when doused with water and turns into an evil gremlin when fed after midnight. That's where Maguai was named after. Far from a troublesome gremlin, Maguai is as loving and adorable as his namesake.
